The effects of loneliness and social isolation on cognitive functioning in older adults: a need for nuanced assessments by Barton W. Palmer In recent years, there has been increased public and research attention directed towards the international “epidemic of loneliness” among older adults, as well as in the broader general population. Overall prevalence varies somewhat by method of assessment and country or region of sampling, but the bulk of studies suggest a general prevalence of approximately 20%−25%. The relationship of aging to the risk and nature of loneliness is complex, with inconsistent findings across studies, and may be affected by a number of specific factors, such as age-related loss of spouse/partners, changes in one’s broader social network, other environmental changes, as well as a range of positive and negative psychological factors. In older and younger adults, loneliness is not only an aversive experience, it has a deleterious impact on cognitive and physical health, and is associated with a substantial increase in all-cause mortality. Distinct Constructs of Loneliness and Social Isolation: Loneliness (a subjective feeling) and social isolation (objective lack of social connections) are related but distinct. Both impact cognitive and physical health independently, but they can also interact and exacerbate each other. Health Impacts: Persistent loneliness is linked to increased risks of cognitive dysfunction, dementia, and higher mortality rates. It may lead to chronic physiological stress, contributing to health decline in older adults.

The Busier You Are, the More You Need Quiet Time Taking time for silence restores the nervous system, helps sustain energy, and conditions our minds to be more adaptive and responsive. For example, silence is associated with the development of new cells in the hippocampus, the key brain region associated with learning and memory. But cultivating silence isn’t just about getting respite from the distractions of office chatter or tweets. Real sustained silence, the kind that facilitates clear and creative thinking, and quiets inner chatter as well as outer.

Associations between loneliness and perceived social support and outcomes of mental health problems: a systematic review by Hawkley, LC & Cacioppo, JT (2018) This research review examines the connection between loneliness, perceived social support, and mental health issues in adults. It highlights how social support can act as a buffer against loneliness and its negative effects on mental health. This is a comprehensive review that analyzes various studies on the topic. It provides strong evidence for the importance of social connection in promoting mental well-being in adults. 1. Loneliness and social isolation are distinct concepts. Loneliness is the subjective feeling of isolation, while social isolation refers to the objective lack of social connections. 2. Social support can come from various sources, including family, friends, romantic partners, and social groups. 3. Having strong social connections can improve physical and mental health, while loneliness has been linked to increased risk of depression, anxiety, and other health problems.

Generational identities: Historical and literary perspectives by Helen Kingstone Discussions of generational identities need to take into account their long and non-linear history. Our present focus on intergenerational inequity Baby-Boomers vs. Millennials disregards the much more complex history of this social identity. This paper by a historian and literary scholar teases apart (1) the diachronic and synchronic meanings of ‘generation’, (2) the difference between ‘a generation in itself’ from ‘a generation for itself’ that has a social identity, and (3) generational identities that are claimed from within or ascribed from without. This paper places the question of how generational change takes place into historical context, showing that while generational identities came to focused attention during the First World War, they arguably began a century earlier, in the upheavals of the French Revolution and worldwide Napoleonic Wars. Nineteenth-century intellectual movements were often generation-conscious, though these identities did not translate across the social spectrum. The paper emphasises the intersectional nature of any generational taxonomy in relation to class, gender, race and national context, drawing brief examples from independence-era Jamaica, post-Soviet Russia, and mid-twentieth-century UK and USA. A final section highlights the value of ‘intergenerational’ approaches over those that emphasize a ‘generation gap’.

Mirroring in Dance/Movement Therapy: Potential mechanisms behind empathy enhancement. Lucy M. McGarry B.Sc., Frank A. Russo Ph.D. Mirroring in Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) practices, by imitating client movements, aims to enhance empathy and emotional understanding. Despite limited evidence, it's proposed that mirroring improves understanding of emotional intentions through the activation of mirror neuron circuits. This review highlights the need for further research to explore the effects of mirroring, its neural mechanisms, and potential applications for patients with empathy difficulties.
