"Happiness at Different Ages: The Social Context Matters" By: John F. Helliwell, Max B. Norton, Haifang Huang, Shun Wang This paper uses a variety of individual-level survey data from several countries to test for interactions between subjective well-being at different ages and variables measuring the nature and quality of the social context at work, at home, and in the community. While earlier studies have found important age patterns (often U-shaped) and social context effects, these two sets of variables have generally been treated as mutually independent. We test for and find several large and highly significant interactions. Results are presented for life evaluations and (in some surveys) for happiness yesterday, in models with and without other control variables. The U-shape in age is found to be significantly flatter, and well-being in the middle of the age range higher, for those who are in workplaces with partner-like superiors, for those living as couples, and for those who have lived for longer in their communities. A strong sense of community belonging is associated with greater life satisfaction at all ages, but especially so at ages 60 and above, in some samples deepening the U-shape in age by increasing the size of the life satisfaction gains following the mid-life low. The research emphasizes that the social environment plays a critical role in shaping happiness, especially as people age.

Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts by Brené Brown Brené Brown has taught us what it means to dare greatly, rise strong, and brave the wilderness. Based on research conducted with leaders, change makers, and culture shifters, she’s showing us how to put those ideas into practice so we can step up and lead. Leadership is not about titles, status, and wielding power. A leader is anyone who takes responsibility for recognizing the potential in people and ideas, and has the courage to develop that potential.

The art of argument | Jordan Peterson | Big Think The other person (and you too!) will try to win instead of trying to solve the problem. What you have to kind of decide is – well two things. The first thing is: you’re probably wrong in some important way. And you might think “Well, so what?” But no, it’s not so simple. Being wrong in some important way is like having a map that doesn’t correspond to the streets. If you’re wrong in some important way, when you go to where you’re going you will get lost and you might end up in a neighborhood that you don’t want to visit! So it actually matters if you’re wrong.

Kings College, London - Free Online Lecture "Generations: Does When You’re Born Shape Who You Are?" Generational thinking is a really big idea that’s been horribly corrupted by endless stereotypes, cliches and myths. This is a real shame, because a better understanding of what’s truly different between generations is a key way to understand the future for our own workforces, clients and society in general. In this session, Professor Bobby Duffy will separate the myths from realities, and give participants a simple framework to understand the type of change we’re seeing. This is vital for leaders in how they engage with their own changing workforce, how they understand changing demand in their market, and how they themselves have been shaped by when they were born.
