The relationships between social support and loneliness: A meta-analysis and review by Xing Zhang The loneliness of modern people is becoming more and more prominent, and has brought profoundly negative effects on mental health. Social support is an important predictor of loneliness. However, the size of the correlation reported by studies on the relation between social support and loneliness varies greatly. The aim of this meta-analysis is to determine the relation between social support and loneliness. One hundred and seventy-seven articles (N = 113,427) were identified, and robust variance estimation with random effects were used. As expected, higher levels of social support were negatively correlated with loneliness (r = −0.39). The association between social support and loneliness were also moderated by several variables. Specifically, the negative relationship between loneliness and social support among rural populations is stronger than that of urban populations in Chinese samples, the effect of perceived social support (r = −0.45) on loneliness is greater than that of other social supports (r = −0.36), and the friend support (r = −0.48) played a more important role in reducing loneliness than that of two other supports (family support: r = −0.34; significant other support: r = −0.40). The current results support robust links between social support and loneliness, emphasizing the important role of social support in reducing levels of loneliness, this may have some implications for future research and loneliness treatments. 1. Quality vs. Quantity of Relationships: The quality of social relationships is more important than the quantity. Meaningful and supportive interactions are more effective in alleviating loneliness compared to having many superficial connections. 2. Role of Technology: Digital communication tools can provide social support and reduce loneliness, especially for those with limited mobility or access to in-person interactions. However, over-reliance on digital interactions without face-to-face contact can sometimes exacerbate feelings of loneliness. 3. Interventions and Strategies: Effective interventions to reduce loneliness include promoting social skills, enhancing social networks, providing opportunities for social interaction, and community-based programs aimed at fostering social inclusion.

Hope: A novel by Andrew Ridker The year is 2013 and the Greenspans are the envy of Brookline, Massachusetts, an idyllic (and idealistic) suburb west of Boston. Scott Greenspan is a successful physician with his own cardiology practice. His wife, Deb, is a pillar of the community who spends her free time helping resettle refugees. Their daughter, Maya, works at a distinguished New York publishing house and their son, Gideon, is preparing to follow in his father’s footsteps. They are an exceptional family from an exceptional place, living in exceptional times. But when Scott is caught falsifying blood samples at work, he sets in motion a series of scandals that threatens to shatter his family. Deb leaves him for a female power broker; Maya rekindles a hazardous affair from her youth; and Gideon drops out of college to go on a dangerous journey that will put his principles to the test. From Brookline to Berlin to the battlefields of Syria, Hope follows the Greenspans over the course of one tumultuous year as they question, and compromise, the values that have shaped their lives. But in the midst of their disillusionment, they’ll discover their own capacity for resilience, connection, and, ultimately, hope.

by Rebecca D. Minehart, Benjamin B. Symon, and Laura K. Rock We may have learned that we need to let people speak without interrupting but taking turns talking does not truly denote listening. And unintentionally hijacking conversations to advise, inject humor, empathize, prioritize efficiency, or insert ourselves into the speaker’s narrative is often done with good intentions, but may instead disrupt the human connection we think we’re forging. Recognizing when to shift out of our habitual styles and consciously apply alternative styles of listening and responding may allow for more effective and meaningful interactions.
